Chubbies

Good shorts can be hard to find.  This fact led the guys at Chubbies to create their own line.  This entrepreneurial bunch embarked on a mission to design shorts that were comfortable, radical, and just a little shorter than normal.

Chubbies are manufactured in the San Francisco Bay area from locally sourced materials and finished with a rock wash to give them a super-soft, worn feel.  Now, these shorts may be comfortable, but they are definitely not for the faint of heart.  Chubbies style is funky, fresh, and irreverent.  Their Remember the 80’s line features ridiculously bright colors and names such as: “The Journeys”, “The Def Leps“, and  “The Hoffs”.

Adjusting to the colors may be an easy step for some, but adjusting to the length might prove difficult.  Chubbies pull inspiration for their inseams from the shorts of the 60s, 70s, and 80s.  Guys may not be accustomed to showing so much leg, but this is where the industry is headed.  Baggy, cargo shorts (thankfully) will not be seen in modern menswear for a while.

Check out the Chubbies site here.  Be brave, order a pair, and don’t expect their shorts to come anywhere near your knees.

Hack & Hue

Today we’re featuring the outstanding handmade ties of Hack & Hue.  According to founders Brent Kochuba and Bob Boylan, these longtime friends founded this Brooklyn-based company in 2007, “To create products whose quality and style are timeless.”

They explain:  “[Brent] came across an old wool YSL necktie when walking past the window of a vintage shop in NYC.  We attempted to find a newer version of that same tie.  Long story short – we couldn’t find it, so we set about making it.  It took several months and a few dozen samples before we had a product which represented what we were searching for.”

This kind of entrepreneurial attitude is precisely what inspires us at Florence & Millie, and we are proud to feature such fine craftsmen on the blog.  Bonus kudos to Hack & Hue for using all locally sourced materials for their ties.

Local Phoenix: Frances & Smeeks

I don’t know how many of you go to vacation in Phoenix, Arizona–and granted, we’re incredibly biased–but Phoenix is one of the coolest places. Ever. The greater Phoenix area is essentially a giant shopping mall full of all the stores everyone knows.  That’s not the incredibly cool part.  The incredibly cool part is that amongst all these commercial giants, local businesses still exist and thrive.  So, if you’re making a trip to Arizona, you should make sure you check out these two shops: Smeeks & Frances.  Located on the NW corner of Central Ave. and Camelback, these shops are a shining beacon of locally owned stores.

Both shops are owned and operated by Georganne Bryant.  She has created two of the most beautiful shops Phoenix has to offer.  Smeeks is an old time candy and novelty shop. There are all sorts of knick-knacks and beautiful displays throughout the store.  Not to mention every kind of soda pop in a glass bottle that you can imagine.  Smeeks really takes into account the playfulness and joy of candy.  All the employees are sweet, clever people. We mean all. We s this having been there easily over 20 times, we have not had a mediocre experience once. It really is a magical place, even just to go visit.  It’s a true testament to locally owned and operated stores.

The other shop is Frances, and its addition: Frances Studio.  Frances is a boutique with unique jewelry, clothing, books and housewares.  One of the best parts of the store is the children’s section.  There are fun books, handmade kids toys and the children’s clothes!  But, we also love all the delicious perfumes and candles. Shopping at Frances isn’t just a place to find beautiful things, but it’s an experience in itself. Frances Studio is more focus on shoes and purses and accessory items, which is wonderful! Frances has a wide selection of TOMS shoes and other incredibly cute, unique shoes.

Make sure next time you’re in Phoenix that you check out these beautiful stores.  And send them our love!  And if you want to see what else they’ve been up to you can always check out their blog.
